With outdoor pools emptied, covered and ready to weather the winter, let’s turn our attention to the pleasures of swimming under a roof. For most of us, that usually means a trip to the gym or the local YMCA. But for a lucky few, it merely means stepping into a different part of the home.

This pool only mesmerizes me. A backlit glass trough across the underside leads the eye to the chandelier at the end. Calm, yet powerful.

This buffet of eye candy, with a trompe l’oeil ceiling and also a faux seashell arching on the pool finish, can be a love-it-or-hate-it affair. But you’ve got to give the designer things for fashion and imagination.

I don’t know where to look first in this Mediterranean-Italian hybrid vehicle. The fiber-optic ceiling remedy that encircles a twilight sky? The striped awnings and window boxes? The Romeo and Juliet balcony that presides over the scene? I’m not sure I’d select this style, but I wouldn’t mind sinking into those sublime layers of surplus just once.

Stacks of windows, an elevated whirlpool and a dreamy blue ceiling remedy — and, clearly, the deer head mounted on the wall — make a luxurious bathing retreat.

This mod, minimalist pool with its own built-in slide reminds me of those iconic whitewashed homes that you see in photos of Santorini, Greece.

The pool’s formality is a visual treat. My favorite signature: the row of chandeliers along its span.

A fireplace at one end of the space is the crowning touch on this atrium-style swimming hall.

Surrounded by means of a frame of cutting-edge industrial architecture, this luminous swimming pool is used chiefly by … wait for it … the family dog. I understand it made me weep too.

Stunning ceiling trusses and beams crown this very simple pool. They need to look lovely when they’re mirrored on the surface of the water.

This eye popper redefines the word “man cave.” A grotto shot with jewel-tone lighting, elaborate stone-look surfaces and tropical plants, it is a total break with reality from the rest of the home.

I leave you with perhaps the most visually magnificent indoor swimming pool on the planet: Olympia Schwimmhalle in Munich, Germany, assembled for the 1972 Olympics and now open to the general public. I missed the chance to take a dip here through a holiday to Munich last summer, and I’m still kicking myself. If I ever return, this will be my first stop.
