The way to Assess Your Spouse's Condenser

By releasing built-up heat energy, the condenser on your fridge has an integral part in keeping food at the appropriate temperature. Despite the refrigerator’s important part in the kitchen, many homeowners fail to properly maintain the condenser, resulting in higher energy bills, more repairs and a shorter lifespan for your appliance. Taking just five minutes to check and clean your condenser can eliminate up to 70 percent of support calls and save you money, according to the Family Handyman.

Checking a Condenser Behind the Refrigerator

Stand next to your fridge, pull it out from the wall and then take a look behind the unit. If you find a massive coil extending up the rear of the unit, your condenser is located on the rear.

Unplug the fridge, and drag it further away from the wall so you can access the condenser. Have a friend help with this measure to prevent injury or harm.

Use a coil cleaning brush or other soft brush to gently wash dust, pet hair and debris from the coil. Vacuum any large particles of dust and debris from the coil and the surrounding region.

Plug the fridge back in, and then transfer it back into place.

Checking a Condenser Under the Refrigerator

Unplug the unit for safety before attempting to confirm the condenser.

Unsnap or remove the grill at the base of the unit’s front to access the condenser. These grills typically have easy tabs that click into place, and require no tools for removal.

Clean the coil with your coil cleaning brush or other brush.

Brush the condenser fan blades to remove dirt and dust with your coil cleaning brush.

Vacuum the shaft of the condenser fan in which the blades match the motor. Use caution to prevent bending the fan blades. There is not any need to lubricate the fan motor or encompassing mechanism.

Snap on the grill back to place, and plug the fridge back in.
