Renovation Detail: The Tapered Craftsman Column

I am almost embarrassed to admit that we bought our house because it has a front porch with square-tapered Craftsman columns. Though they’re wrapped in aluminum and have seen better days, their proportions are so perfect, they make me weak in the knees.

Craftsman design columns are fine, historic and simple in design. Critical in defining Craftsman or Arts and Crafts–style houses, the squared columns are often paired with other bungalow characteristics, such as deep, deep overhanging front porches, exposed rafters, gabled rooflines and built-in bookcases. Their square is guaranteed to add value to a home.
